Join our supportive community...

Navigating change, and how you can help...

Dear Hcis,

Summer is usually a time for family vacations, summer camps and outdoor excursions - but this season will be different for millions of people affected by autism and their families. Camps are being cancelled or reprogrammed so campers can attend virtually, while many travel concerns remain in place. These changes create added challenges for the autism community to engage in social activities or enjoy typical summer routines. As we navigate this new way of living, the Autism Society of America continues to provide relevant information for individuals with autism and their families.

Thanks to the continued financial support from you and others, we have been able to maintain a constant flow of resources and support to the autism community as we endure the COVID-19 pandemic together.

A mother recently reached out stating her "stress is high" since she lost her job during the pandemic, and is caring for her three kids with autism who have been quarantined for months together. This woman, and so many other caretakers and families, are juggling the roles of parent, teacher, therapist, service provider and more, with limited time to search for information and support.

The Autism Society continues to help families like this by providing resource lists for activities, virtual experiences, and social stories to help individuals with autism understand the changes around them. More than 85,000 people have accessed our COVID-19 toolkit, and downloaded our resources. Our social story, "Keeping Friends Safe" explains how summer playtime will be different this year through plain language and visual cues.

For over 55 years, the Autism Society of America has been recognized as the premier organization for all affected by autism. As we prepare for the future, we also must take care of the here and now.  COVID-19 has created great financial challenges for the Autism Society, and we are committed to being prudent stewards of the very limited resources we have.

But we need your help. Will you please make a donation today in support of our invaluable work?

The Autism Society will continue to lead the charge as we provide educational resources for routine adaptations, at-home supports, and protocols for staying safe in a community-based setting. We will continue to advocate for additional federal resources to support autistic individuals during this pandemic. Our efforts at the state and local level will be ongoing as we ensure that the equipment and service needs of all affected including those with higher support needs and residents of group homes are taken into consideration. Please help us remain an unparalleled resource for the autism community.

We thank you for your committment to inclusivity, your advocacy for change, and your support as we continue to navigate this crisis together. Stay safe, be well, and know that we are stronger together.

Sincerely,

Christopher Banks

President & CEO

Wealth linked with physical and mental aging; antibodies in people recovered from COVID-19; gut bacteria influence behavior in worms

June 30, 2020 Edition

COVID-19 is an emerging, rapidly evolving situation, and we at NIH are doing everything we can toward the development of diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines. You can find the latest public health information from CDC at www.coronavirus.gov and the latest research information from NIH at www.nih.gov/coronavirus. Meanwhile, science continues to progress on many other fronts, and we will continue to try to bring you stories across a wide range of topics.

Lower wealth linked with faster physical and mental aging

Older adults with less wealth had sharper declines in many measures of physical and mental health than those with more wealth.

Novel Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2

Potent antibodies found in people recovered from COVID-19

Although most people who recovered from COVID-19 had low levels of antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 in their blood, researchers identified potent infection-blocking antibodies.

Caenorhabditis elegans

Gut bacteria influence behavior in worms

Specific gut bacteria influenced eating decisions in worms by affecting their response to odors. The findings give insight into one way gut microbes may affect behavior.

Antibodies Target Spike Protein

Finding Antibodies that Neutralize SARS-CoV-2

Posted on  by Dr. Francis Collins

It's now clear that nearly everyone who recovers from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) produces antibodies that specifically target SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus that causes the infection. Yet many critical questions remain. A major one is: just how well do those particular antibodies neutralize the virus to fight off the infection...

Engaging Your State Partners in Statewide Transition Plan Implementation

July 8, 2020 from 1:30-3:00 PM ET

The home and community-based services (HCBS) settings rule was effective on March 17, 2014. In order to ensure that their programs are in compliance with the settings criteria by March 17, 2022, states are required to submit a Statewide Transition Plan (STP) to CMS for review. In this training we will:

  1. Review key components for successful implementation of the STP to ensure compliance with the HCBS settings criteria.
  2. Detect barriers that may be inhibiting a state's across-the-board commitment to implementation of the STP.
  3. Identify strategies for working across state agencies to facilitate implementation of the STP.
  4. Cultivate partnerships to ensure ongoing monitoring and compliance with the HCBS settings rule.
  5. Share states' experiences/strategies in the creation of a unified effort to implement the STP.
