| Federal Grants - HHS/Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): Cooperative Agreement. Improving Detection and Management of Glaucoma and Other Eye Diseases Among High Risk Populations. Supports strategies to better engage, detect, and manage glaucoma and other eye diseases among vulnerable populations, particularly groups with higher prevalence such as African Americans over age 40.

- HHS/National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD): Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Grant. Innovations for Healthy Living - Improving Minority Health and Eliminating Health Disparities (R43/R44 - Clinical Trial Optional). Supports the development of a product, tool, technology, process or service for commercialization with the aim of eliminating disparities or improving health in racial/ethnic or sexual and gender minority populations.

- HHS/NIH, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB): SBIR Grant. Technologies for Healthy Independent Living for Heart, Lung, Blood and Sleep Disorders (R43 Clinical Trial Not Allowed). Supports the design and development of technologies to monitor health or deliver care in a real-time, accessible, effective, and minimally obtrusive way for older adults with a chronic heart, lung, blood, or sleep condition.

Deadline is March 8. Learn more. Scholarships / Fellowships - United Negro College Fund (UNCF): Fund II Foundation UNCF STEM Scholars Program. This scholarship, internship, and mentoring program is open to African American high school students who are planning to pursue careers in STEM fields.

- Development Fund for Black Students in Science and Technology: STEM Scholarship. Eligibility is limited to undergraduate African American students majoring in STEM fields at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

The National Medical Association: Registration is open for the Annual Colloquium on African American Health. At this health policy focused forum, population health experts will address many of the issues facing African American patients, health care providers, and community leaders.

- The American Heart Association: Registration is open for the Quality of Care and Outcomes Research Scientific Sessions. This conference is for clinicians, researchers, medical students and trainees, nurses, pharmacists, administrators, healthcare and managed care professionals, policymakers and other healthcare professionals interested in quality of care and outcomes research in cardiovascular disease and stroke.

Publications - HHS/NIH NHLBI has developed several publications on African American heart health for both health professionals and consumers. In addition to the resources highlighted below, you can search for further publications by keyword at the NHLBI website.
- The Jackson Heart Study Data Book. The Jackson Heart Study, conducted in the Jackson, MS metropolitan area, was the first large-scale study of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in African Americans. This data book presents in lay language the results of the study. It also provides health information for all African Americans about CVD, its risk factors, and ways to prevent and control the disease. Learn more.
- With Every Heartbeat Is Life: A Community Health Worker's Manual for African Americans. This 12-lesson course on heart health education was specifically created for the African American community. It includes activities, group idea starters, and reproducible handouts. Learn more.

| Opportunities for Public Comments - HHS/NIH, NHLBI: Request for information (RFI) on Understanding the Health of Women and the Role of Sex/Gender in Mechanisms of Heart, Lung, Blood, and Sleep (HLBS) Diseases and Disorders. This RFI offers the research community, health care professionals, patient advocates, and others an opportunity to provide input on topics such as scientific gap areas in mechanisms of HLBS diseases, training, and resource needs.

- Medical University of South Carolina, in collaboration with the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD): Phase 1 study. Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation and Task-Specific Practice for Post-Stroke Neglect. This study will test the effects of different rehabilitation training sessions that combine non-invasive brain stimulation with arm rehabilitation training for individuals with unilateral spatial neglect following stroke. Researchers seek volunteers age 18 years or older. Study to be conducted at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC. Learn more.

Interns will conduct legislative and public policy research on civil rights and social justice challenges, including health policy, environmental justice, criminal justice, economic development, and education.

[CDC VitalSigns, September 2015]. This four-page publication focuses on cardiovascular health risk factors and summarizes the data found in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR). This data is displayed as digestible info-graphics and includes additional information and organization resources for the public. In addition, this resource is free to download, print, and share.
