  • HHS/OMH: Meeting. Addressing Sickle Cell Disease: A Strategic Plan and Blueprint for Action. OMH has requested that the National Academy of Sciences convene an ad hoc committee to develop a strategic plan and blueprint for addressing sickle cell disease. OMH encourages stakeholders to attend the committee's upcoming meeting. Interested parties can attend online or in-person.

  • HHS/OMHYouth Health Equity Model of Practice (YHEMOP) Summer 2019 Health Equity Fellowship. Through its YHEMOP program, OMH places students enrolled in higher education studies into short-term health equity fellowships to help meet the needs of diverse organizations. Feb 28, Holistic Health and Sickle Cell Disease webinar, 1 pm ET. Hosted by OMH.
  • HHS/OMH: Webinar. Holistic Health and Sickle Cell Disease: A Focus on Mental and Behavioral Health. This webinar will discuss the various aspects of mental and behavioral health in sickle cell disease patients, as well as a holistic approach to treatment. Presenters will share information on the mental health disparities that exist among sickle cell patients and ways that health care providers can work to address them.
    February 28, 1:00 pm ET. Register.

OMH Grants

  • HHS/Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH): Grant. OMH Hepatitis B Demonstration Grant Program. OMH seeks to develop model comprehensive hepatitis B programs that include strategic partnerships between: community-based organizations servicing communities-at-risk; departments of health; perinatal hepatitis B programs; safety net providers; research centers; and healthcare facilities.

  • HHS/Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA): Cooperative agreement. Pediatric Mental Health Care Access Program. Eligibility is limited to states, political subdivisions of states, and American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) tribes and tribal organizations.

  • HHS/Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): Grant. Research Grants to Identify Effective Strategies for Opioid Overdose Prevention. Research is intended to directly improve the ability of state and local health departments to implement and improve interventions to prevent fatal and nonfatal opioid overdose.

  • HHS/National Institutes of Health (NIH): Research project grant. Intervention Research to Improve Native American Health (R01 Clinical Trial Optional). Studies should be culturally appropriate and result in promoting the adoption of healthy lifestyles, improve behaviors and social conditions and/or improve environmental conditions related to chronic disease.

  • HHS/OASH: Cooperative agreement. Replication of Programs Proven Effective through Rigorous Evaluation to Reduce Teenage Pregnancy, Behavioral Risk Factors Underlying Teenage Pregnancy, or Other Associated Risk Factors (Tier 1) Phase I.

  • HHS/CDC, National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention: Cooperative agreement. Systems-level Approach to Improving Health Outcomes for HIV-positive State Prison Inmates Released to the Community. Eligibility is limited to county, city/township or state governments, and public and state controlled institutions of higher education.

  • USA Today Network: A Community Thrives Program. Supports health and wellness initiatives focused on helping neighborhoods or regions strengthen their sense of community, with priority given to ideas focused on traditionally underserved populations.

  • Rita and Alex Hillman FoundationHillman Innovations in Care Program. Supports nurse-led health care projects that address the needs of underserved populations, including the homeless, racial and ethnic minorities, and members of the LGBTQ community.

  • National Recreation and Park Association: 2019 Increasing Access to Healthy Foods Innovation Grants. Supports healthy eating and food access through parks and recreation, including participation in USDA child nutrition programs, and implementing new strategies that improve access to healthy foods in diverse communities.

  • American Medical Association Foundation: Community Health Grants. Awards funds to community-based organizations whose programs focus on the prevention and reduction of type 2 diabetes and hypertension.

  • National Center for Farmworker Health: Scholarship. Bobbi Ryder Migrant Health Champion Award. Offers financial assistance to individuals pursuing or continuing their career in the migrant health field.

Health Observances - American Heart Month

  • The CDC Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention has developed an employee toolkit, Successful Business Strategies to Prevent Heart Disease and Stroke, which provides effective strategies for improving employees' health and lowering their risk for heart disease and stroke. The toolkit also includes resources to help state health departments make the business case to employers in their communities.   • The CDC Workplace Health Resource Center provides employers resources to create a healthy work environment. Its resources include links, tools, toolkits and guidance on heart health topics such as blood pressure, cholesterol, heart attack and stroke, as well as cardiovascular risk factors such as depression, stress, obesity and tobacco use. Health Observances - National Children's Dental
Health Month

  • Protecting tiny teeth from dental disease starts before birth. To celebrate National Children's Dental Health Month, the American Academy of Pediatrics, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and supporting organizations are raising awareness about the importance of oral health and pregnancy through a new oral health toolkit. Clinical Trials

  • Emory University, in collaboration with Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and the NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH): Phase 2 clinical trial. Arginine Therapy for Sickle Cell Disease Pain. Researchers seek volunteers age 3-21 years old who have a diagnosis of sickle cell disease and experience pain that requires medical care in an acute care setting. Study to be conducted at the Hugh Spalding and Egleston locations of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta in Atlanta, GA. Learn more

  • The University of Cincinnati, in collaboration with the NIH National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), the University of Maryland, Massachusetts General Hospital and Duke University: Observational study. Genetic and Environmental Risk Factors for Hemorrhagic Stroke (GERFHS). Researchers seek non-Hispanic Black volunteers age 18 years or older who have had a hemorrhagic stroke and live within the University of Maryland (Baltimore, MD), Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston, MA) or Duke University (Durham, NC) area. Workforce Development

Internships / Mentoring

  • American Psychiatric Association: Externship in Addiction Psychiatry. This program is intended to identify racial/ethnic minority medical students who have an interest in psychiatric services related to substance use disorders, prevention and early intervention. Students will spend a month working with a psychiatrist mentor at a designated site where they will get hands-on experience with how psychiatrists treat patients with substance use disorders and participate in an interactive didactic experiential learning program.

@ The Knowledge Center - Recommended Reading

The book Medicating Race: Heart Disease and Durable Preoccupations with Difference covers how Blacks and Whites have been disparately diagnosed and treated for heart disease. It discusses landmark heart studies and their legacies, as well as genetics, hypertension, and the eventual development of race-specific heart medications.
