The National Institutes of Health has launched a major initiative, called HEAL (Helping to End Addiction Long-termSM) to accelerate scientific solutions to the national opioid crisis. This initiative involves research in two areas: (1) improved treatments for opioid misuse and addiction and (2) enhanced pain management.

NCCIH is an active participant in both components of the HEAL Initiative. We're leading or co-leading several programs, including:

  • Studies to evaluate interventions for pain management in real-world health care delivery systems
  • Studies of behavioral interventions, such as mindfulness meditation or cognitive behavioral therapy, to see if they can enhance medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder
  • Research to better understand low-back pain and develop improved, individualized ways to treat it
  • Basic research to explore and discover new pain treatment options.
