One of the most rewarding things about being the President of my local Autism Society affiliate (Autism Society of Colorado) is meeting people in our community who have benefited from our support. I love going to events and hearing from parents about how special it is to have a place to go that is sensory friendly, non-judgmental and accepting. I love hearing from adults who may have just recently been diagnosed and are now finding acceptance in "their community." I believe that being Autistic myself helps me to be a more empathetic leader. I have many of the same challenges as others who are diagnosed as adults. I also have a wonderful son who was diagnosed with autism at age 4 so I can relate to what I hear parents say.
I really couldn't be a good leader without the support of such wonderful staff, board members and volunteers. I am proud that our local affiliate is truly putting the voices of Autistic individuals, like myself, front and center.
The Autism Society has over 80 affiliates throughout the country. We are all making a difference in improving the quality of lives of our families. But we have a long way to go. The number of people with autism who are unemployed or underemployed is unacceptable. Here in Colorado, our affiliate staff and board are absolutely dedicated to working for inclusion and acceptance. We take the time to listen to anyone who reaches out to us. We pride ourselves on our 'Autism 101' community education programs. We do our best to listen to Autistic voices.
I so enjoy meeting people and hearing their stories. It's really rewarding to hear that the Autism Society has been helpful to them. Over the holidays I had the pleasure of meeting a family who decided to raise some funds by showcasing their amazing holiday light display. While we were waiting for the final lights to be hung I was able to meet the family and hear about how the Autism Society of Colorado was the first place they called when they received their daughter's diagnosis. The message they received from the doctor who gave them the diagnosis emphasized all that their daughter wouldn't be able to do -- but when they spoke to one of our affiliate staff, they were told all about what wonderful things her daughter could do. They told me that being able to speak to someone who had a positive message made such a difference. Will you help us to continue making a difference in the lives of individuals and families living with autism? Your support changes lives and makes the impossible seem possible.
Please consider making a donation to the Autism Society today and help us continue to empower the lives of individuals and families across the country who are affected by autism.
Sincerely, Kristen Erby President, Autism Society of Colorado Autistic self-advocate
