Hey Hcis,
The Autism Society of America and Lidl US have partnered together to host a series of sensory-friendly events at all Lidl US stores for National Autism Awareness Month. Each Thursday beginning April 15th, Lidl will reduce ambient lighting and sounds that make shopping challenging for a sensory-sensitive person. The stores will eliminate in-store music, announcements, and the sound of their scanners as well as provide more assistance for people on the spectrum.
As part of the month-long effort, Lidl will also release a limited-edition peanut butter in tribute to Eric "Bean" McKay, a 15-year old who has autism and recently shared his award of a lifetime supply of peanut butter. Lidl pledged to donate 10 cents of the proceeds from each jar to the Autism Society of America and their work to improve the lives of all affected by autism.
"We are honored that Lidl selected us to receive the proceeds of their #LidlBEanutButter. More importantly, we are working together to create sensory-friendly events," says Scott Badesch, President and CEO of the Autism Society. "These events provide special needs families and individuals a shared experience at retail locations and more importantly in the community where they live and work. Lidl US is showing other retailers that with a few small changes, you can create a shopping experience that is accessible and inclusive to the autism community. For that, we applaud their efforts and encourage others to do the same."
