Speaking Up About Mental Health Essay Contest. Open to students ages 16-18. Entries due 5.31.19. #SpeakUpMH
  • HHS/National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), in collaboration with the Calvin J. Li Memorial Foundation: Essay contest. Speaking Up About Mental Health! NIH invites students ages 16 to 18 years old to submit essays that explore ways to address the stigma and social barriers that adolescents from racial and ethnic minority populations may face when seeking mental health treatment.

OMH Grants

  • HHS/Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH): Grant. Youth Engagement in Sports: Collaboration to Improve Adolescent Physical Activity and Nutrition (YES Initiative). This grant seeks to support projects that address the HHS priority to expand youth participation in sports and encourage regular physical activity, especially for youth populations with lower rates of sports participation and communities with limited access to athletic facilities or recreational areas.

  • U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA): Cooperative agreement. Healthy Communities Grant Program. Supports community initiatives to reduce environmental risks, protect and improve human health and improve the quality of life.

  • HHS/Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS): Cooperative agreement. Integrated Care for Kids (InCK). The InCK Model will assist states in addressing priority health concerns for children, including opioid and other substance use, and the effects of opioid use on families.

  • HHS/Administration for Community Living (ACL): Grant. Disability and Rehabilitation Research Projects: Assistive Technology to Promote Independence and Community Living.

  • HHS/CMS Office of Minority Health (CMS OMH): Grant. Minority Research Grant Program. Eligibility is limited to Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic Serving Institutions, Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions, and Tribal Colleges and Universities.

Scholarships / Fellowships

  • American Indian Graduate Center: Fellowship. Special Higher Education Program. Eligibility is limited to enrolled members of a federally recognized American Indian tribe or Alaska Native group who are pursuing a master, doctorate or professional degree as full-time students at an accredited graduate or professional school in the U.S.

  • University of Wisconsin-Madison/School of Medicine and Public Health: Postdoctoral fellowship. Health Disparities Research Scholars. Provides training and mentoring in interdisciplinary research that addresses health disparities among minority populations with an emphasis on maternal/child, adolescent and family health.

  • Morgan State University: Registration is open for the Addressing Urban Health Disparities Through Participatory Health Research Conference. This is an international forum for professionals and community activists from diverse backgrounds, including academicians, students, practitioners, community stakeholders, policy advocates, and others interested in addressing urban health disparities through participatory methods.
    June 21-22 in Baltimore, MD. Register.

  • HHS/Office of Minority Health (OMH), in partnership with the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Corps: Workshop. Cultural Awareness: What Bias do You Bring to the Table? Part of the 54th Annual USPHS Scientific & Training Symposium, the purpose of this training is to increase effective leadership and service by elevating Commissioned Corps Officers' cultural awareness and competency and by providing the knowledge and skills to help officers better serve individuals from diverse backgrounds during deployments and at their agencies.

  • HHS/NIH: Workshop. Pathways to Prevention (P2P): Achieving Health Equity in Preventive Services. This P2P workshop will assess the available scientific evidence on achieving health equity in the use of clinical preventive services in a health care setting, focusing on three leading causes of death in the United States: cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.

Older Americans Month: Connect, Create, Contribute. May 2019.
  • HHS/ACL recognizes May as Older Americans Month with the theme "Connect, Create, Contribute." This theme encourages older adults to connect with friends, family, and services that support participation, create by engaging in activities that promote learning, health, and personal enrichment, and contribute time, talent, and life experience to benefit others. For promotional materials, social media messaging, activity ideas and other resources, please visit the Older Americans Month webpage.
     
World lupus Day: 10 May
  • The World Lupus Federation recognizes May 10 as World Lupus Day. They have created a toolkit that includes flyers, logos and media tools, as well as an online global survey of people with lupus. The survey is available in English, Spanish, Chinese, Bengali, French, and Portuguese, and results will be published on World Lupus Day.  

    You and your organization can continue to raise awareness of lupus throughout the month of May via materials and campaigns, such as Be Fierce, Take Control, that have been developed by the Lupus Foundation of America and the American College of Rheumatology.  

Clinical Trials

  • The University of California, Davis (UC Davis), in collaboration with the NIH National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the Alzheimer's Association: Behavioral study. Vietnamese Caregiver Intervention Study. Researchers seek Vietnamese volunteers age 21 years or older in order to develop and implement a culturally-appropriate intervention to reduce stress in Vietnamese dementia caregivers, particularly those providing day-to-day, hands on care to a family member with Alzheimer's disease. Study to be conducted at UC Davis in Sacramento, CA. Learn more.

  • UConn Health, in collaboration with Khmer Health Advocates, the University of Connecticut, Penn State University and the NIH National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK): Behavioral study. Diabetes Risk Reduction Through Eat, Walk, Sleep and Medication Therapy Management for Depressed Cambodians (DREAM). Researchers seek Khmer speaking Cambodian or Cambodian-American volunteers age 35-65 years old who have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder and have an elevated diabetes risk score per American Diabetes Association guidelines. Study to be conducted at UConn Health in Farmington, CT, Khmer Health Advocates in West Hartford, CT and at the Center for Southeast Asians in Providence, RI. Learn more

Workforce Development

Internships / Mentoring

  • Seattle Indian Health Board/Urban Indian Health Institute (UIHI): Paid internship. Public Health Internship. Interns will explore a range of public health career opportunities, participate in indigenous methodologies training, and gain knowledge that is aligned with UIHI values of using western science to complement indigenous knowledge systems. Intern projects will be generally related to UIHI focus areas of disease surveillance, HIV/HepC, suicide and substance mis-use prevention, diabetes, and chronic disease prevention.

  • New York University/Center for the Study of Asian American Health: Internship. Health Disparities Research Training Program (HDRTP). This internship, which includes the Chinese American Health Equity Research Initiative (CHERI), is open to students and health professionals who are interested in gaining skills to conduct community-based participatory research with Asian American communities.

@ The Knowledge Center - Recommended Reading

In recognition of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, the Knowledge Center recommends the special issue of journal AAPI Nexus: Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders Policy, Practice and Community titled, "AAPIs 2040." The publication consists of articles revolving around issues such as health equity, environmental health, aging, and education, written with consideration that the Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are projected to comprise approximately 10 percent of the U.S. population in 2040.
