Mapping Hepatitis Elimination Webinar, May 22, 3 pm ET. OMH. OHAIDP.

 

  • HHS/OMH and the Office of HIV/AIDS and Infectious Disease Policy (OHAIDP): Mapping Hepatitis Elimination. Responding to the National Viral Hepatitis Action Plan call for more coordinated and collaborative efforts aimed at elimination, a wide range of stakeholders are leading and engaged in these efforts across a variety of settings including states, local jurisdictions, health systems and non-governmental organizations. This webinar will feature several elimination project examples, practical steps and key messages to inform individuals and organizations in responding to the public health threat of viral hepatitis.

OMH Grants

  • HHS/Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH): Grant. Youth Engagement in Sports: Collaboration to Improve Adolescent Physical Activity and Nutrition (YES Initiative). This grant seeks to support projects that address the HHS priority to expand youth participation in sports and encourage regular physical activity, especially for youth populations with lower rates of sports participation and communities with limited access to athletic facilities or recreational areas.

Federal Grants

  • HHS/Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): Cooperative agreement. A Comprehensive Public Health Approach to Asthma Control Through Evidence-Based Interventions. The purpose of this award is to improve the reach, quality, effectiveness and sustainability of asthma control services and to reduce asthma morbidity, mortality and disparities.

  • HHS/National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute on Aging (NIA) and National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS): Research grant. Mechanisms Mediating Osteoarthritis in Aging (R01). Invites applications intended to encourage and accelerate the characterization of new or underutilized models and the testing of hypotheses that will lead to an improved understanding of the mechanisms of initiation and progression of osteoarthritis and the role of aging in the process.

  • HHS/Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA): Grant. Medical Student Education Program. Provides grants to public institutions of higher education to expand or support graduate education for medical students preparing to become physicians in the top quintile of states with a projected primary care provider shortage in 2025.

  • HHS/NIH, National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) and National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI): Notice of special interest. Administrative Supplements to Enhance Inclusion of Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander Populations in Minority Health and Health Disparities Research. NIMHD and NHGRI are soliciting administrative supplements to support collection and/or analysis of data from Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander populations.

  • HHS/HRSA: HEP Talks series. Hepatitis C and the Opioid Epidemic. In recognition of Hepatitis Awareness Month, join Richard Moore II (Director, HIV and Viral Hepatitis Programs, North Carolina Rural Health Group) for a discussion on hepatitis C treatment strategies for people who inject drugs.

  • HHS/NIH, National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI): Implementation Research for Health Equity webinar series. Preventing Cardiovascular Disease: Implementation Science in the Safety Net. This series is designed to highlight health topics such as late-stage implementation research, health disparities, population health, biomedical research capacity building and workforce diversity. Its inaugural presentation will focus on the importance of implementation science in addressing issues related to a community's cardiovascular health.

  • HHS/Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP): Healthy People 2020 webinar. Who's Leading the Leading Health Indicators? Maternal, Infant and Child Health. This webinar will highlight national and state efforts to reduce infant deaths and preterm births. Attendees will also learn how the Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Georgia's Prenatal Education Program is working to help expectant families get the information and resources they need to have healthy birth and postpartum outcomes.

Health Observances

National Asian & Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day: May 19
  • HHS recognizes May 19 as National Asian & Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. For further information and resources, please visit HIV.gov.

    CDC, the NIH National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) have developed HIV/AIDS health promotion campaign materials, some of which are geared towards Asian and Pacific Islander populations. You can find a list of campaigns here.
       
  • HHS and the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) recognize May as Asthma Awareness Month. AAFA has developed a series of social media tools, including images and sample social media posts, to spread awareness of asthma and allergies. As part of World Asthma Day on May 17, the CDC has developed an Asthma Awareness Toolkit, which includes resources for consumers and schools.

Clinical Trials

  • HHS/NIH, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), in collaboration with the Inner-City Asthma Consortium and GlaxoSmithKline: Phase 2 clinical trial. A Trial of Mepolizumab Adjunctive Therapy for the Prevention of Asthma Exacerbations in Urban Children (MUPPITS-2). NIH researchers seek volunteers age 6-17 years old with a diagnosis of asthma made less than 1 year prior to recruitment. Study to be conducted at the Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX. Learn more.

  • Duke University, in collaboration with the NIH National Cancer Institute (NCI): Behavioral study. To Enhance Breast Cancer Survivorship of Asian Americans (TICAA). Researchers seek Chinese, Korean or Japanese female volunteers age 21 years or older to test the efficacy of a technology-based information and coaching/support program for Asian American breast cancer survivors. Study to be conducted at the Duke University School of Nursing in Durham, NC. Learn more.

Internships / Mentoring

  • University of Hawai'i at Manoa: Hawaii/Pacific Basin Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Rotations. AHEC provides placement and financial assistance for medical students and residents who would like to gain clinical experience in remote rural sites within the VA Pacific Islands Health Care System. Locations include Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Palau and the Federated States of Micronesia. Learn more

@ The Knowledge Center - Recommended Reading

In recognition of National Women's Health Week, the Knowledge Center recommends this book from the monographic series Research in the Sociology of Health Care titled, Health and Health Care Concerns Among Women and Racial and Ethnic Minorities. The volume is divided into four parts with articles on reproductive health, health care workers, language access and aging, as well as a variety of minority health issues.
