Join Global Health on Follow Global Health on USAID Celebrates World Breastfeeding Week 2019   Happy World Breastfeeding Week! We are excited to join the global community to celebrate the vital role of breastfeeding to save lives, prevent malnutrition, and enhance long-term health and development.   Breastfeeding is a high-impact intervention that benefits individuals, societies, and economies. Improving global rates of optimal breastfeeding practices could prevent over 840,000 deaths of women and children annually and save the global economy an estimated $341 billion each year. Yet in many countries, breastfeeding rates remain low. USAID is proud to support efforts to scale up breastfeeding worldwide to ensure that every child receives the nourishment and care they need for optimal growth and development and that families receive comprehensive support.   Women cannot breastfeed alone; breastfeeding is a team effort! In more than 25 countries, USAID works in communities and health facilities to provide mothers and families with breastfeeding education, counseling, and support, and to address the key barriers to optimal breastfeeding practices. Through partnerships with governments, health systems, and other key stakeholders, we also work to enhance the policies and programs that support women and families to breastfeed.
