Thursday, August 29, 2019 Genomics can be a valuable tool for studying viruses: By tracking changes in the genome of the Zika virus, NIAID-funded researchers have been able to trace its path as it made its way through the Americas. In a new paper in Cell, the researchers were able to use genomics to uncover a previously unreported Zika outbreak, which took place in Cuba in 2017-2018. These techniques are especially important for studying viruses like Zika, which can sometimes spread undetected for weeks or months before the first cases are reported. |
