FYI Spotlight

  • HHS/Office of Minority Health (OMH), in partnership with the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA): Training. Sickle Cell Disease Training and Mentoring Program (STAMP). The STAMP Program is a 6-month series of free web-based trainings that will cover various topics on basic sickle cell disease (SCD) care, such as preventive services, connecting patients with support services and community resources, best practices for co-management with hematologists, hydroxyurea initiation and follow-up, and outpatient pain management. Blog for Health Equity
  • HHS/OMH: New blog post. Cherokee Choices: A Ride to Remember. This blog highlights the Remember the Removal Bike Ride, a program of the Cherokee Nation and Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians that allows Cherokee adolescents and young adults to commemorate the removal of the Cherokee people from their eastern homelands while also engaging in active physical training for the ride, such as weekly workouts, swimming, yoga and spinning. Federal Grants

  • HHS/HRSA, Bureau of Primary Health Care: Grant. Fiscal Year (FY) 2020 Ending the HIV Epidemic - Primary Care HIV Prevention. Provides supplemental funding to health centers to expand HIV prevention services, focusing on supporting access to and use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).

  • Department of Justice (DOJ)/Office on Violence Against Women (OVW): Grant. FY 2020 Justice for Families Program Solicitation. Supports the improvement of courts' and communities' ability to respond to families affected by domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking or child sexual abuse.

  • HHS/Administration for Community Living (ACL): Cooperative agreement. Empowering Communities to Address Behavioral Health and Chronic Pain through Chronic Disease Self-Management Education Programs. Supports the development, delivery and sustainability of self-management education and support programs that address behavioral health and/or chronic pain among older adults and adults with disabilities.

  • U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD): Grant. Community Development Block Grant Program for Indian Tribes and Alaska Native Villages. Eligibility is limited to federally recognized American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) Tribal governments and AI/AN Tribal organizations.

  • Sigma Foundation for Nursing and the Jonas PhilanthropiesSigma/Jonas Philanthropies Collaborative Research Grant. Supports registered and doctoral nurse scholar-led research in the areas of mental health, rural health and veterans' healthcare.

  • American Lung AssociationPublic Policy Research Award. Supports research on and evaluation of existing, pilot and demonstration public programs and demonstration projects that inject innovative ideas and provide evidence for the development of new public policies impacting lung health.

  • Akron Community FoundationGay Community Endowment Fund. Supports programs that improve the health and well-being of the LGBTQ community in Akron, Ohio, particularly mental health and suicide prevention programs.

Scholarships / Fellowships

  • Global Brain Health Institute: 2020-2021 Atlantic Fellows for Equity in Brain Health. This 12-month program provides training in brain health, leadership and dementia prevention to early and mid-career healthcare professionals, with an emphasis on local and global health inequities that need to be addressed by practitioners and policymakers. Fellows will be based at the University of California, San Francisco or Trinity College Dublin.

  • National Academy of Sciences/Committee on Population: Stakeholder meeting. Women's Mental Health from a Life Course Perspective. National experts will discuss how factors from adolescence through later life shape women's maternal and mental health trajectories.   • HHS/Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ): New report. 2018 National Healthcare Quality and Disparities Report. This report assesses the performance of the U.S. healthcare system and identifies areas of strengths and weaknesses, as well as disparities, for access to healthcare and quality of healthcare. Quality is described in terms of six priorities: patient safety, person-centered care, care coordination, effective treatment, healthy living and care affordability. Learn more.

  • Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC)State Suicide Prevention Infrastructure. SPRC has developed six recommendations to help stakeholders identify and strengthen key elements of suicide prevention infrastructure in their communities. Learn more

  • U.S. House of Representatives/Ways and Means Committee: Request for information on the Rural and Underserved Communities Health Task Force. The Committee seeks input on the delivery and costs of healthcare and related social determinants in urban and rural underserved areas, as well as ideas on strategies to address the challenges that contribute to health inequities.

Clinical Trials

  • HHS/National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK): Observational study. Family Investigation of Nephropathy and Diabetes (F.I.N.D.). NIH researchers seek volunteers age 18 years or older who have been diagnosed with diabetes and diabetic nephropathy and who have at least one sibling or both parents available as potential study participants. Study to be conducted at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, Md. Learn more.

  • The M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, in collaboration with the NIH National Cancer Institute (NCI): Behavioral study. Weight Management and Health Behavior Intervention in Lowering Cancer Risk for BRCA Positive and Lynch Syndrome Families. Researchers seek volunteers age 18 years or older for a study on how weight management and health behavior intervention works in helping patients with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer and Lynch syndrome mutation carriers lower their risk for cancer. Study to be conducted at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Learn more.

This 9-month program provides training to mid-career healthcare professionals on the intersection of primary care, public health and health equity.

@ The Knowledge Center - Recommended Reading

The manual Healthy Brain Initiative, Road Map for Indian Country is a resource that provides background information on dementia and Alzheimer's disease and presents data on the condition among American Indian/Alaska Native populations. It lists opportunities to involve communities through public health strategies, while highlighting successful programs. The document is designed for tribal leaders, health professionals, as well as state and regional offices and other organizations who serve American Indian/Alaska Native communities.
