FYI Spotlight

  • HHS: Ready, Set, PrEP. As part of Ending the HIV Epidemic (EHE): A Plan for America, this new national program will provide HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to thousands of people in the United States at no cost. To qualify for the Ready, Set, PrEP program an individual must: Test negative for HIV, have a valid prescription from their healthcare provider and not have insurance that covers prescription drugs. Learn more.
     
Ready, set, PrEP makes PrEP medication available at not cost. Find out if you qualify.

Funding

Federal Grants

  • HHS/Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA): Grant. The Substance Abuse and HIV Prevention Navigator Program for Racial/Ethnic Minorities. This program encourages the use of a navigation approach (community health workers, neighborhood navigators and peer support specialists) to provide services.

  • HHS/SAMHSA, Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS): Grant. Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT) Program for Individuals with Serious Mental Illness. Eligible applicants are states, counties, cities, mental health systems, mental health courts or any other entity with authority under the law to implement, monitor and oversee AOT programs. 
    Deadline is January 24, 2020. Learn more.

  • HHS/National Institutes of Health (NIH): Research grant. Implementation Research in HRSA Ryan White Sites: Screening and Treatment for Mental and Substance Use Disorders to Further the National Ending the HIV Epidemic Goals (R01 Clinical Trial Optional).

  • Saucony Run for Good Foundation: Grant. Youth Running Programs. Supports community-based nonprofit organizations that initiate and support running programs for youth age 18 years or younger.

  • ALDI: Grant. Smart Kids Program. Supports programs that encourage children to actively participate in education, physical activity, nutrition, socializing and the arts in communities where ALDI has stores, warehouses and offices.

  • Visiting Nurse Association Foundation: Grant. Home and Community-based Health Services. Supports home and community-based health services for medically-underserved residents of the metro Chicago area, including the Illinois counties of Cook, Lake, McHenry, DuPage, Kane and Will.

Scholarships / Fellowships

  • American Psychological Association (APA)APA Congressional Fellowship. This 1-year program places psychologists with a member of Congress or a congressional committee in order to contribute to the more effective use of psychological knowledge in government and to broaden awareness about the value of psychology-government interaction.

  • National Council of Urban Indian Health (NCUIH): Listening session. Eliminating Hepatitis C and HIV in Indian Country: A Focus on Urban Indian Health. NCUIH will provide a forum and a platform for Urban Indian Health Programs to express their community's circumstances, needs, perspective and interests to HHS Indian Health Service (IHS) officials working on the Eliminating Hepatitis C and HIV in Indian Country Initiative.

Resources

  • HHS/Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA): New report. The Intersection of HRSA's Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) and the Opioid Epidemic. This report highlights how HRSA RWHAP providers can administer services to address clients' behavioral health needs, including those related to opioid use disorder. Read the full report (PDF). 

  • Community Catalyst: Toolkit. Expanding Substance Use Prevention and Early Intervention in Schools. This toolkit provides information and resources to mobilize communities to expand school-based services for substance use prevention and early intervention, including resources on the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and the Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) approach. Learn more.

Opportunities for Publication

  • The American Journal of Public Health (AJPH): Call for papers for a special AJPH supplement issue, Aligning Health and Social Service Systems to Improve Population Health: Science, Policy, and Practice. AJPH invites original research articles reporting the implementation and impact of novel models that align social determinants of health such as housing, transportation, educational reforms, income and employment assistance, child and family supports, and legal services with medical services and public health programs.

Clinical Trials

  • HHS/NIH, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID): Observational study. Influenza in People with Normal and Weakened Immune Systems. NIH researchers seek volunteers age 2 years or older who are suspected of having influenza by clinical diagnosis or had a positive clinical diagnostic test for influenza within the past 2 months. Study to be conducted at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, Md. Learn more.

  • HHS/CDC, in partnership with Wake Forest University, the Triad Health Project and the University of North Carolina, Greensboro: Clinical trial. HIV Prevention among Latina Transgender Women Who Have Sex with Men: Evaluation of a Locally Developed Intervention. Researchers seek Hispanic/Latinas, age 18 years or older, who self-identify as male-to-female transgender to evaluate the effectiveness of ChiCAS, a Spanish-language intervention that promotes access to PrEP and consistent condom use. Study to be conducted at Wake Forest University Health Sciences in Winston-Salem, NC. Learn more.

Healthcare Professionals

  • HHS/HRSA, National Health Service Corps (NHSC), in partnership with HHS SAMHSA: Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) Training. This free training opportunity is available to physicians, doctors of osteopathic medicine, nurse practitioners and physician assistants who have an active Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) number to dispense controlled substances. Internships / Mentoring

  • HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN): Research and Mentorship Program (RAMP) Scholar Program for African-American and Latinx Medical Students. Grant recipients will work under the mentorship of HVTN-affiliated investigators to conduct HIV prevention research projects in the areas of basic, clinical, behavioral, laboratory and social science.

The book "My Nerves Are Bad": Puerto Rican Women Managing Mental Illness and HIV Risk is an ethnography that explores how fifty-three Puerto Rican women in Northeastern Ohio with mental illness survived while managing their activities of their daily lives.
