National Minority Health Month: Active & Health, April 2020
  • HHS/Office of Minority Health (OMH) announces the theme for National Minority Health Month 2020. National Minority Health Month begins on April 1 and, for the second consecutive year, the theme will be Active & Healthy. HHS OMH is again teaming up with the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP)'s Move Your Way campaign and partners throughout the country in raising awareness about the important role an active lifestyle plays in keeping people and communities healthy.   • HHS/OMH, in partnership with the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)Sickle Cell Disease Training and Mentoring Program (STAMP). The STAMP Program is a series of free web-based trainings for primary care providers that will cover various topics on the basics of sickle cell disease (SCD) care. Register.

Federal Grants

  • HHS/Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA): Disaster Response Grant Program. Supports mental and substance use disorder treatment, crisis counseling and other related services to individuals impacted by 2018 hurricanes, wildfires and earthquakes, and 2019 tornadoes and floods.   
    Deadline is February 12. Services for AdultsSchool-Based Services.  

  • HHS/Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ): Research demonstration and dissemination project. Improving Management of Opioids and Opioid Use Disorder in Older Adults (R18). Supports evidence-based interventions and quality improvement strategies in primary care settings with large segments of socially at-risk older adults.

  • HHS/HRSA, Bureau of Health Workforce: Grant. Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program. Eligible applicants include sponsoring institutions of accredited addiction medicine or accredited addiction psychiatry fellowship programs.

  • JA Community Foundation: Large and Multi-Year Grants for Aging Services. Supports new and existing California-based programs that address senior health and social services for Japanese-Americans.

  • Focus for Health Foundation: Child Health and Social Justice Grants. Supports small non-profits that address child sex abuse and social determinants of health.

  • Colorado Health FoundationOut-of-School-Time Physical Activity Program. Supports Colorado-based before school, after school and summer physical activity programs for children and youth ages 4-18 years old.

Scholarships / Fellowships

  • Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board: Tribal Researchers' Cancer Control Fellowship Program. The purpose of this program is to increase research capacities and build research skills among American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) investigators so that they will be better prepared to design and implement cancer-related research projects within AI/AN communities.

  • NMAC (National Minority AIDS Council): 50+ Strong & Healthy webinar series. Co-Morbidities and Aging Related Health Challenges Living with HIV.   • HHS/NIH, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) recognizes February as American Heart Month with the theme, "#OurHearts are Healthier Together." NHLBI is focusing on the importance of social support to engaging in and maintaining heart healthy behaviors like getting more physical activity, eating a healthy diet, reducing stress and quitting smoking. February 7: National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. #StopHIVTogether. Let's stop HIV together. CDC.
  • HHS/HIV.gov recognizes February 7 as National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD) with the theme, "We're in This, Together." You can find an event planning guide, graphics, a social media kit and other resources at the NBHAAD website.

Clinical Trials

  • The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), in collaboration with the NIH Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD): Behavioral study. Strong Futures: A Trial of Two Primary Care Based Interventions to Promote Optimal Health in Latino Infants and Toddlers. Researchers seek Spanish-speaking Hispanic/Latinx parents and their newborn infants. Study to be conducted at the Children's Health Center at San Francisco General Hospital. Learn more.

  • Cross Cultural Health Care Program: Equity & Inclusion Training of Trainers Institute. This 40-hour training is designed to build the internal training capacity of health and human services organizations. Sponsored trainers work with expert facilitators to become qualified to deliver a set of equity and inclusion curricula.

@ The Knowledge Center - Recommended Reading

In recognition of National Glaucoma Awareness Month, the Knowledge Center recommends the booklet Glaucoma: What You Should Know. Published by the National Institutes of Health National Eye Institute (NEI), this document is designed for consumers and explains what the condition is, how to detect it, who is at risk, treatment, research and where to find more information about the subject. It also is available in Spanish.
