National Minority Health Month 2020

It's National Minority Health Month! This year, the HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) invites everyone to join #ActiveandHealthy, a national social media campaign that will focus on the steps we can take every day in and around the house to keep our minds and bodies active. The campaign has daily themes that encourage physical activity, healthy eating habits and mental wellness. Daily themes include:

  • Wellness Mondays
  • Trivia Tuesdays
  • Work Out Wednesdays
  • Throwback Thursdays
  • Family Fridays
  • Spotlight Saturdays
  • Empowerment Sundays

The HHS Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have released a Long-Term Care Nursing Homes Telehealth and Telemedicine Toolkit that addresses expanded Medicare benefits during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The HHS Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) Technical Resources, Assistance Center, and Information Exchange (TRACIE) has compiled a list of COVID-19 Behavioral Health Resources

The HHS Center for Faith and Opportunity Initiatives has developed a guidance document for faith-based organizations, COVID-19: Recommended Preventative Practices and FAQs for Faith-based and
Community Leaders

The National Council of Nonprofits has published an analysis of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act as it applies to charitable nonprofit organizations. 

The SCDAA has published Recommendations for Coronavirus (COVID-19) Preparedness: Health Alert for People with Sickle Cell Disease and their Caregivers

And the NIHB has created a COVID-19 Tribal Resource Center, a national effort to advocate and secure resources for American Indian/Alaska Native Tribes to respond to COVID-19.

The Sickle Cell Disease Coalition has developed a Transition Toolkit that addresses the challenges faced by SCD patients age 18-30 years old as they transition from their childhood doctor to an adult doctor. It addresses both the medical and social aspects of SCD care.

Find the Library at Your Place: National Library Week, April 19-25

The American Library Association recognizes April 19-25 as National Library Week with the theme "Find the Library at Your Place." While many libraries across the country remain closed due to COVID-19, readers can find their place at the library utilizing free virtual services and digital content such as electronic books, virtual storytimes, homework help, movies and much more! Some libraries are offering registered users with virtual library cards to ensure access and free drive-up Wi-Fi on the grounds outside of library buildings.

Don't forget to check out the OMHRC Knowledge Center's free digital library, which contains an extensive collection of free materials pertaining to the health status of minority groups in the United States.

This observational study, sponsored by the NIH National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), seeks male volunteers age 18-35 years old for a study on how changes in how a person's body burns energy or calories can affect their weight over time. Study to be conducted at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, Md.

Your Health Matters! (Tu Salud ¡Si Cuenta!): Promoting Healthy Lifestyles in Latino Families

This behavioral study, sponsored by the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and the NIH National Cancer Institute (NCI) and National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), seeks Hispanic/Latinx volunteers age 18 years or older who are able to enroll with one eligible adult family member up to 70 years old. The fact sheet, Exercise for Your Bone Health, published by the NIH Osteoporosis and Related Bone Diseases National Resource Center, explains why exercise strengthens bones and helps to prevent and treat osteoporosis.
