OMH Invites You to Be Active & Healthy!

The HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) encourages everyone to focus on safe ways to stay Active & Healthy in and around their homes and advance mental and emotional wellness. Through simple and creative steps, everyone can keep their minds and bodies active while adhering to the social distancing guidelines to stop the spread of COVID-19. Encourage others to take active and healthy steps towards better health by spreading the word, downloading our graphics, and using the hashtags #ActiveandHealthy and #EmotionalWellness.

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

During Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, the OMH celebrates the achievements and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) in the United States. Throughout the observance in May, OMH will honor the rich culture of AAPIs and promote overall health by encouraging an active and healthy lifestyle, regular doctor visits and better eating habits. Pfizer supports patient-focused initiatives that help patients and providers address the heightened medical and educational needs of patients with PI during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The HHS Administration for Children and Families (ACL) supports Alaska Native Tribes and Tribal organizations in their response to family violence, domestic violence and dating violence in a culturally sensitive and relevant manner.

Rural HIV/AIDS Planning Program

The HRSA Federal Office of Rural Health Policy will target seven states (Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma and South Carolina) with a disproportionate number of HIV diagnoses in rural areas.

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), CDC

The CDC invites comments on a proposed information collection project, the National Healthcare Safety Network Patient Module for Coronavirus Surveillance in Healthcare Facilities, that seeks to capture the daily, aggregate impact of COVID-19 on healthcare facilities and monitor medical capacity to respond at local, state and national levels.
Deadline for comments is June 16.

Public Health Reports, a peer-reviewed journal of public health research and practice published by the Office of the U.S. Surgeon General and the U.S. Public Health Service, is calling for papers focused on the public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Submissions are accepted on a rolling deadline

The HHS National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director, Dr. Francis Collins, interviewed the NIH National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) Director, Dr. Eliseo Pérez-Stable, a part of the Francis Collins at Home video series. They discuss which groups of people are being disproportionately affected by COVID-19, the factors that are contributing to these disparities and what NIH is doing in this area of research.

The American Society of Hematology has developed a checklist of considerations for Sickle Cell Disease Patients Presenting to the Emergency Department During the COVID-19 Pandemic

And NMAC has compiled a list of COVID-19 Resources that address the impact of the pandemic on people living with HIV/AIDS. 


Report: Chartbook on Healthcare for Asians and Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders

The HHS Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has published a new Chartbook on Healthcare for Asians, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders which shows several areas of improved patient safety, such as appropriate prescription medicines for seniors; more effective care for people suffering a stroke; and increased rates of vaccine for pneumonia. However, disparities remain, including getting timely medical or dental care or treatment, having language assistance during medical appointments, and being aware of serostatus among people with HIV.

The chartbook summarizes trends in healthcare and disparities and shows selected demographics. It is part of a series related to the National Healthcare Quality and Disparities Report, which AHRQ produces each year.

Report: HIV Surveillance Reports

The CDC National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention has published an updated HIV Surveillance ReportDiagnoses of HIV Infection in the United States and Dependent Areas, 2018, as well as a supplemental report, Estimated HIV Incidence and Prevalence in the United States 2014–2018. The reports include data on HIV incidence by race/ethnicity, particularly among Black/African American and Hispanic/Latinx communities.

Diabetes Prevention Program Lifestyle Intervention in the Marshallese Population

This behavioral study, sponsored by the University of Arkansas, seeks Marshallese volunteers age 18 years or older with a BMI greater than or equal to 25 to compare the effectiveness of a traditional Diabetes Prevention Program-Life style Intervention (DPP-LI) and a Pacific DPP-LI. Study to be conducted at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Northwest in Fayetteville, AR.

A Lay-Led Intervention for War and Refugee Related Trauma

This behavioral study, sponsored by the University of Washington, the NIH National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)Seattle Pacific University and Case Western Reserve University, seeks Islamic, Somali volunteers age 18-65 years old to examine the efficacy and feasibility of a program called Islamic Trauma Healing on PTSD, depression, somatic symptoms and quality of life among refugees. Study to be conducted at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio and the University of Washington in Seattle, Wash.

The Sickle Cell Disease Association of America (SCDAA) P.O.W.E.R ECHO Project uses the ECHO telecommunication model to reach community health workers and organizations by offering online training services on emerging and current topics in sickle cell disease. 


Psychological First Aid: Supporting Yourself and Others During COVID-19 Online Course

The American Red Cross's Psychological First Aid: Supporting Yourself and Others During COVID-19 is an online course designed to help individuals support themselves and lend support to others during and following the COVID-19 outbreak. The topics covered in the course include recognizing stress, practicing mental health first aid, caring for yourself, supporting your family and supporting your coworkers.

The guide COVID-19 Resources for Indigenous Peoples provides resources that focus on informing members of Indigenous Tribes about coronavirus. Developed by Arizona State University (ASU) Labriola National American Indian Data Center and the ASU Library, the guide includes Indigenous-centric resources where people can find news, data and tips through organizations such as the NIHB COVID-19 Tribal Resource Center, the HHS Indian Health Service (IHS), National Council of Urban Indian Health Coronavirus Resource Center and Johns Hopkins Center for American Indian Health. It also highlights videos that provide background information on the virus.
