Make your mental health a priority.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

Dear Hcis,

Each May, the Autism Society of America recognizes "Mental Health Awareness Month" - a message that is aplified during these challenging times. Feelings of anxiety and depression are widespread within the autism community - as well as neurotypical people - due to isolation, routine changes, uncertainty, and fear.

In a recent Facebook poll on our page, over 60% of you requested more mental health resources, and the Autism Society has responded.

Since the middle of March, the Autism Society of America has been providing the autism community materials addressing mental health challenges such as fear, anxiety, frustration, and depression. We were the first national autism organization to respond to the COVID-19 crisis with a comprehensive toolkit of information and resources, compiled by leading experts from our Panel of People on the Autism Spectrum and Panel of Professionals. Our toolkit includes topics such as the CDC's Mental Health & Coping with COVID-19; MHIN: Addressing Mental Health & Supports; and WHO Mental Health Considerations.

Our weekly "Coronavirus Information Series" on Facebook Live, features experts in mental health and related fields, as well as self-advocates bravely sharing their own feelings of anxiety, fear, and hope for a better tomorrow. Subject matter includes, "Stay Connected to Combat Loneliness and Social Isolation" and "How to Protect Your Mental Health During 'Social Distancing."

Today, and always, our goal is to remain the trusted source of useful information within the autism community. Please consider making a donation of any amount to the Autism Society so that we can continue to support the autism community with mental health supports and community during these challenging times.

If you or someone you know with autism needs help, please call 800-3-AUTISM (800-328-8476) to speak directly to an Information and Referral Specialist. Our National Helpline is another important service provided by the Autism Society of America and made possible by generous donors like you.

My Best,

Christopher Banks
