NIMH Announces New Strategic Plan for Research

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is pleased to announce the release of the new Strategic Plan for Research. The new plan provides a framework for advancing research priorities that support the Institute's mission: To transform the understanding and treatment of mental illnesses through basic and clinical research, paving the way for prevention, recovery, and cure.

The Strategic Plan outlines four high-level Goals:

These four Goals form a broad roadmap for the Institute's research priorities over the next five years, beginning with the fundamental science of the brain and behavior, and extending through evidence-based services that improve public health outcomes.

The NIMH Strategic Plan for Research will be updated regularly to keep pace with ever-evolving scientific advances and research priorities that may lead to new discoveries. Check the Progress page for each Goal frequently to learn about key research projects and findings from NIMH and NIMH-funded investigators that advance the Institute's mission.

NIMH is grateful to the variety of stakeholders, including the National Advisory Mental Health Council, federal and private partners, organizations, advocacy groups, people with lived experiences and their families, and NIMH leadership and staff who provided feedback on the development of the NIMH Strategic Plan for Research.
