If you're thinking of trying a complementary health approach, safety is one of the most important issues to consider. Here are some ideas that may help you think about safety and how to minimize risks.

  • Individuals respond differently to health products and practices. What's safe for one person may not be safe for another.

  • "Natural" doesn't necessarily mean "safe."

  • For approaches administered by a practitioner, such as acupuncture or massage therapy, the practitioner's training, skill, and experience are important.

  • Herbs and other dietary supplements may interact with medications.

  • It's a good idea to discuss complementary health approaches with your health care provider.
