Four Decades of HIV/AIDS: Much Accomplished, Much to Do

Unprecedented scientific advances made over the past four decades have transformed HIV from a nearly always fatal infection into a manageable chronic disease. In a perspective published in the New England Journal of Medicine, NIAID Director Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., and his colleague H. Clifford Lane, M.D., review progress made against HIV/AIDS. They also highlight the importance of optimally implementing HIV prevention and treatment strategies and advancing research toward an HIV vaccine.
