National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month

July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month

The HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) recognizes July as National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month and encourages partners to join us in educating communities about the importance of mental healthcare and treatment especially during the pandemic. OMH will also encourage behavioral health professionals to develop their knowledge and skills to deliver culturally and linguistically appropriate services through OMH's free and accredited e-learning program. MENTAL Health Innovation Challenge

The Administration for Community Living (ACL) along with the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH), components of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), are offering up to $750,000 in prizes and an opportunity to reach up to 10 million Americans in the Mobilizing and Empowering the Nation and Technology to Address Loneliness & social isolation (MENTAL) Health Innovation Challenge. The goal of the challenge is to increase consumer awareness and use of technology tools that keep racial and ethnic minority populations, older adults, people with disabilities and Veterans socially engaged and connected to families, friends, communities and activities of interest.
Deadline for registration is July 15.

Grief Reach Grants: Pandemic Relief Fund

The National Alliance for Grieving Children and the New York Life Foundation will provide capacity building funds to organizations that offer support for COVID-19 pandemic-related childhood bereavement.

The HHS has created a video on Five Things About Staying Mentally Healthy During the COVID-19 Outbreak.

And the Kaiser Family Foundation has published issue briefs on Finding Policy Responses to Rising Intimate Partner Violence during the Coronavirus Outbreak and the Implications of COVID-19 for Mental Health and Substance Use

The NIH National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity have developed Brother, You're on My Mind: Changing the National Dialogue Regarding Mental Health among African American Men, an initiative that seeks to raise awareness of the mental health challenges associated with depression and stress that affect African American men and their families.

The National Hispanic and Latino MHTTC has published a booklet, Mental Health Disparities among Hispanic and Latino Populations, that emphasizes the social determinants of health, as well as non-medical health-related social needs, and their impact on Hispanic/Latinx mental health outcomes. 

And NAMI provides Spanish-language information on mental health and its cultural dimensions among the Hispanic/Latinx community: La salud mental en la comunidad latina

Call for Articles: Impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic on LGBTQ+ Health and Well-Being

The Journal of Homosexuality seeks article-length manuscripts for an upcoming special issue on "Impacts of the COVID-19 Pandemic on LGBTQ+ Health and Well-Being." The journal seeks manuscripts of empirical studies, as well as brief commentary, conceptual or theoretical contributions.

Latina Adolescent Depression Treatment Study

This observational study, sponsored by Duke University and the NIH NIMHD, seeks Hispanic/Latina first generation or second generation immigrants, age 13-17 years old, who have been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder or Persistent Depressive Disorder/Dysthymia and have been referred to psychotherapy or prescribed medication for depression. Study to be conducted at the Lincoln Community Health Center in Durham, NC.

Training: Medical Interpreter - Bridging the Gap

The Cross Cultural Health Care Program 64-hour, online training teaches foundational medical interpreter skills such as roles of the interpreter, interpreter code of ethics, medical terminology, interpreting in mental health and much more. This professional development opportunity also prepares participants to meet state and national testing requirements.

Training: Preventing Adverse Childhood Experiences

The CDC has developed new training modules for mental health and pediatric medical care providers. The modules address the central role of mental health and pediatric care professionals in understanding, recognizing, preventing and treating adversity in childhood. Continuing education credits are available for completion of Introductory Training Modules 1 and 2.

Training: Suicide Prevention Online Courses

The Suicide Prevention Resource Center self-paced, online courses are designed for clinicians and other service providers, educators, health professionals, public officials and members of community-based coalitions who develop and implement suicide prevention programs and policies. Courses are available on counseling on access to lethal means, suicide prevention data, suicide prevention strategies and preventing suicide in emergency department patients.
