Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease in which the immune system attacks the membrane lining the joints. It's more common in women than men, and it often starts in middle age or even earlier in life.

Researchers have looked at several complementary and integrative health approaches for rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. There's some evidence of possible benefits for supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids, gamma-linolenic acid, or the herb thunder god vine. The amount of research on mind and body approaches is too small for conclusions to be reached about whether they are helpful.

To get the best results, don't use complementary health approaches to delay getting care for rheumatoid arthritis, and don't substitute other approaches for your prescribed treatment. If you're considering adding any complementary approaches to your treatment program, discuss them with your health care provider.

If you have joint symptoms that might be caused by rheumatoid arthritis, see your health care provider promptly. Medical treatment for rheumatoid arthritis can delay or prevent joint damage; it doesn't just treat symptoms. The sooner treatment starts, the better.
