Is Your Friend Being Abused? You Can Help.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Domestic violence, also known as relationship abuse or dating violence, is when a person purposely hurts their friend, boyfriend, girlfriend, or loved one. Girls who experience domestic violence are more likely to also experience depression and anxiety, engage in drug or alcohol use, and think about suicide.

If your friend tells you about her abuse, you can help by:

  • listening without judging or blaming
  • telling your friend that you are always there to listen
  • reminding your friend of all the friends and family who care about her
  • offering to go with your friend to talk to an adult
  • helping your friend make a safety plan
