Join Global Health on Follow Global Health on A World Without Polio Is Possible   For more than 25 years, USAID has supported efforts to eradicate polio worldwide. Though the road to polio eradication has never been easy, a polio-free world is closer than ever due to the unwavering dedication, creative problem solving, and incredible hard work of local communities, national governments, and global partners alike.    Globally, polio cases have been reduced by 99.9 percent thanks to the countless health workers, community leaders, and volunteers who have never lost sight of reaching every last child. More than 18 million people are walking and 1.5 million people are alive today who would have otherwise fallen victim to polio.    This year—2020—is a notable one to celebrate World Polio Day, with the Africa region certified wild polio-free even as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to disrupt essential health care worldwide, including routine immunization programs. Sporadic outbreaks of vaccine-derived polio further underscore the importance of a sustained and evolving response to polio in order to stop continued virus transmission. Moving forward, USAID and its partners will use the lessons learned and infrastructure built on the road to polio eradication to inform our response to the current pandemic and future infectious disease outbreaks.     Happy World Polio Day!    We hope you will join us in celebrating by: Watching our video on how a world without polio is within reach.  Commemorating on social media using the hashtags #WorldPolioDay and #VaccinesWork.
