This holiday season, the HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) is promoting a very important and simple task for communities across the country #HolidayAskWearAMask. By wearing a mask, watching your distance, and washing your hands frequently, together, we can make the holidays safer for everyone.

Communities can also help lower the risk of spreading COVID-19 during the holidays through personal prevention practices recommended by the HHS Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This includes wearing a mask, staying at least 6 feet apartstaying home when sickhandwashingdisinfecting frequently touched surfaces, and postponing travel.

HHS Announces New Initiative with American Heart Association to Address Hypertension among Racial and Ethnic Minority Populations

OMH & HRSA Hypertension and Racial Minority Populations Initiative. HHS OMH and HHS HRSA.

As part of the federal response to COVID-19, HHS has announced a new initiative involving two cooperative agreements with the American Heart Association (AHA) to improve COVID-19-related health outcomes by addressing hypertension (high blood pressure) among racial and ethnic minority populations. The $32 million project from OMH and the HHS Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Bureau of Primary Health Care will implement a national initiative to improve blood pressure control among the most vulnerable populations, including racial and ethnic minorities. The project will support participating HRSA-funded health centers by providing patient and provider education and training for effective hypertension control.

The HHS Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released an article in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR): The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices' Updated Interim Recommendation for Allocation of COVID-19 Vaccine — United States, December 2020. The CDC has also uploaded a new episode of MMWR Weekly COVID-19 Briefing podcast. 

Salud America! at UT Health San Antonio has added a vaccine update to its Juntos, We Can Stop COVID-19 digital communication campaign to help Hispanic/Latino families take action to slow the spread of coronavirus: Get the COVID-19 vaccine when it's available to you! The new fact sheets address vaccine hesitancy among Hispanics/Latinos in English and Spanish.

The John Hopkins Center for American Indian Health has developed a fact sheet for American Indian/Alaska Native communities, Understanding COVID-19 Vaccines.

The American Heart Association (AHA) offers Blood Pressure Fact Sheets as well as toolkits and patient handouts on the AHA's 2017 Hypertension Clinical Guidelines for pharmacists and other healthcare professionals. 

AHA has also developed the Don't Die of Doubt campaign, which seeks to educate consumers that hospitals are still the safest place to go during an emergency such as a heart attack or stroke, even during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mi Propio Camino Intervention for Blood Pressure Medication Adherence (MPC Study)

This randomized controlled trial, sponsored by the University of California, Irvine and the NIH National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), seeks Hispanic/Latino volunteers, age 18 years or older, with uncontrolled hypertension. The study is to be conducted at the Health Policy Research Institute in Irvine, CA.

Antenatal Platelet Response on Aspirin and Correlation with Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy: a Pharmacokinetic Study Through Pregnancy (APROACH-PK Study)

This phase 1-2 clinical trial, sponsored by the Thomas Jefferson University, the NIH Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and March of Dimes, seeks female volunteers age 13-55 years old with a risk for hypertension, diabetes, preeclampsia, renal diseases or autoimmune diseases. The study is to be conducted at the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA.

Call for Nominations: Development of Measure for Patient Receipt of Key Information Following an Outpatient Procedure

CMS and the Yale New Haven Health Services Corporation Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (CORE) have developed a patient-reported outcome performance measure (PRO-PM) for the effective transfer of clinical information from provider to patient after a procedure or surgery. CMS and CORE are seeking nominations for Technical Expert Panels for this PRO-PM in order to inform development of the measure, including design of the patient survey instrument, data collection methodologies, the measurement window, risk adjustment and performance measure calculations.
Deadline is January 15, 2021.
