People with cancer want to do everything they can to combat the disease, manage its symptoms, and cope with the side effects of treatment. Some mind and body practices may help people manage cancer symptoms or side effects of treatment. For example:

  • Yoga may help improve anxiety, depression, and stress in people with cancer. It may also help lessen fatigue in breast cancer patients and survivors.

  • Acupuncture may be helpful for nausea and vomiting related to cancer treatment.

  • Preliminary evidence suggests that massage therapy may help to relieve symptoms such as pain, nausea, anxiety, and depression in people with cancer.

  • Mindfulness-based stress reduction may help cancer patients reduce anxiety, stress, fatigue, and general mood and sleep disturbances.

If you are a cancer patient, be sure to consult your health care provider before using any complementary health approach, including mind and body practices. Special precautions may be needed to make sure the practice is safe for you.
