Celebrating Black History Month

In honor of Black History Month, the top focus for our February Toolkit is on the intersection of autism and race. As an organization that is committed to human rights, we know that when the intersectionality of multiple layers occurs, a person's experience can become even more marginalized, as is often seen with autistic individuals who are also Black.  In 2020, the CDC reported for the first time that there is no disparity between the number of Black children identified with autism compared to white children - but there are significant disparities that exist in education, healthcare and support services for autistic individuals of color. Our aim is to highlight these inequities, and provide more information and resources related to addressing the gap. The February toolkit also provides resources for relationship building & socialization, COVID-19 vaccine education and continued COVID-19 support. Highlighted below are just some of the events and programs offered related to our February theme: The Autism Society of Central Virginia hosted a speaker series about autism and race. Autism Society Greater Cincinnati Is hosting "Friday Game Night" (virtual) for adults with autism every Friday. Autism Society Tidewater Virginia is hosting the 11th annual "Insights into Autism" free virtual conference on February 5th. Autism Society Colorado is hosting a "Support Group for Spouses/Partners of Adults on the Spectrum." Autism Society Greater Wisconsin started their own virtual "Stop Movie Motion Club" beginning February 8th. Autism Society Texas is hosting "87th Legislative Policy Symposium." Howard County Autism Society provides "Covid-19 Emergency Small Grants" with the Madhu Thibaudeau Family Fund.
