Are you considering using a complementary health approach, such as acupuncture, meditation, or a dietary supplement, to help manage a health problem? Here are some things to consider:

  • What does the science say? Find out what research has been done on the effectiveness and safety of the approach that interests you.

  • Talk with your health care provider. Your provider can help you determine whether the approach is safe for you and whether it's likely to be helpful.

  • Choose a practitioner carefully. If you're planning to see a complementary health practitioner, such as an acupuncturist or massage therapist, choose the practitioner with the same care you would use when selecting a conventional health care provider.
