Investigational Vaccine for Malaria Gives Strong, Lasting Protection

malaria sporozoites

Two U.S. Phase 1 clinical trials of a candidate malaria vaccine have found that the regimen conferred unprecedentedly high levels of durable protection when volunteers were later exposed to disease-causing malaria parasites. The vaccine combines live parasites with either of two widely used antimalarial drugs—an approach termed chemoprophylaxis vaccination. A Phase 2 clinical trial of the vaccine is now underway in Mali, a malaria-endemic country. If the approach proves successful there, chemoprophylaxis vaccination, or CVac, potentially could help reverse the stalled decline of global malaria.

What complementary health approaches do consumers use for travel-related health issues? There are quite a few—including dietary supplements and home remedies. Some are mostly folklore, without any research to back them up, but others have scientific evidence to support their use. For example, there's evidence that melatonin supplements may be helpful for jet lag, and probiotics may help relieve traveler's diarrhea.

Message from the Director

NIDCD publishes workshop report on otitis media and holds May advisory council meeting

The quest to better understand otitis media (OM) has made great strides in recent years. Researchers—many supported by the NIDCD—have identified potential vaccine candidates, uncovered the role of bacterial biofilms in treatment resistance, developed OM animal models, and characterized the host immune response to the condition, among many other advances. To accelerate the translation of this strong foundational knowledge to clinical strategies for preventing and treating OM, last autumn the NIDCD convened a group of scientific experts online for the NIDCD Workshop on Otitis Media in Early Childhood. This message will give you a sense of the topics the participants discussed and the knowledge gaps they identified. I've also included highlights from the May meeting of the National Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NDCD) Advisory Council Meeting.
