Dear Hcis,
Summer is when most kids look forward to playing outside, going to camp, and having carefree days at home. Unfortunately, for kids with autism, the transition can be difficult. Summer causes a disruption of schedules and structure that previously helped individuals and families feel safe and in control.
Part of our work this summer included celebrating Pride month in June. In addition to highlighting the intersectionalities between the autism and LGBTQ+ communities, the Autism Society of America celebrated Autistic Pride Day on June 18th.
For additional reassurance or an uplifting voice, read the personal letter from Russell Lehmann, a member of our Panel of People on the Autism Spectrum titled “View from the Spectrum.” He encourages all of us to:
“Run towards, and not away from your fears. Fear, firstly and foremost, is nothing more than opportunity disguised as risk. Behind every single fear in your life is a wondrous reward that you will only attain if you push through what frightens you.”
Thank you for being such a committed and generous donor to the Autism Society. Your contribution allows us to find those opportunities masked as risks and helps us push past any fear that we may encounter.
Sincerely,
