OMH Launches New Microsite for the Minority Health SVI

New! CDC and OMH Launch the Minority Health Social Vulnerability Index

The HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) developed the Minority Health Social Vulnerability Index (MH-SVI) to enhance existing resources to support the identification of racial and ethnic minority communities at the greatest risk for disproportionate impact and adverse outcomes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Visit the new OMH MH-SVI microsite to learn more about the Minority Health SVI and its potential uses, as well as download the corresponding dataset and data dictionary.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the first COVID-19 vaccine for the prevention of COVID-19 in individuals 16 years of age and older. FDA also has issued Emergency Use Authorizations for additional doses of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines for moderately to severely immunocompromised people.

This recorded Clinician Outreach and Communication Activity Call provides information on the CDC's guidance on booster shots for immunocompromised people.

Community Catalyst has published Peers Speak Out: Improving Substance Use Treatment Outcomes During COVID-19.

Mental Health America (MHA) has created resources for parents and caregivers, including information on in-person and at-home schooling for young children and teens. MHA has also developed Spanish-language handouts on at-home learning and school re-openings.

Hispanic/Latino Health Report: Updates to Healthy Border 2020

The U.S. Border Health Status Report 2020 (PDF) was released in January 2021 by the U.S.-México Border Health Commission. The report reviews select Healthy Border 2020 health indicators in the U.S. border states based on available public use data.

Substance Use Data: National Survey on Drug Use and Health

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) presents substance use trends over time. This data can be used to study changes in society and emerging issues on topics such as initiation of substance use, perceived risks, and the intersection of substance use and mental health. Data slides, including information on opioid use, are available for American Indians/Alaska Natives, Black/African Americans, Asians/Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders, Hispanics/Latinos, and lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults.

Opioids and Police Safety Study

This study, sponsored by the New York University and the CDC, seeks active duty police officers to provide a knowledge base regarding key obstacles and facilitators of the willingness and preparedness of police to administer naloxone and related risk reduction practices and evaluate the efficacy of a web-based opioid-related occupational safety and risk reduction curriculum. Findings from this study will be applied to the development and implementation of effective interventions for police officers aimed at harmonizing law enforcement practices with public health goals. The study will be carried out at the Pittsburg Police Department in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Intervening with Opioid-Dependent Mothers and Infants

This study, sponsored by the University of Delaware and the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, seeks opioid-dependent pregnant women, age 18 years or older, who are in their third trimester of pregnancy and on medication for opioid use disorder. The study will be carried out at the University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware.
