The journal Science Immunology has published a summary of the design and protocols of the IMPACC study, a prospective longitudinal survey of people hospitalized with COVID-19 that began in May 2020 and is being funded and co-led by NIAID. The study aims to understand the interplay among viral load, immune pathology and clinical manifestations of COVID-19 and to generate hypotheses for the identification of biomarkers and effective therapeutics. The authors hope the new report will facilitate coordination with other COVID-19 studies worldwide to foster data comparison and meta-analyses. They also hope the report will serve as a model for future multicenter studies in which a comprehensive, longitudinal assessment of biological processes is desired in the setting of public health emergencies.
