Hcis, make an impact

Dear Hcis,

The wide range of the autism spectrum also brings with it a wide range of diverse thoughts, feelings, and emotions. The Autism Society of America works hard to celebrate the diversity of those with autism spectrum disorder, but those differences can also lead to life safety issues.

A recent study showed that individuals with autism were 3 times more likely to attempt suicide than their neurotypical peers.

September is National Suicide Prevention Month, and the Autism Society of America is continuing to shine a light on the prevalence of suicide in the autistic community and offering ways you and your loved ones can be on the lookout for warning signs.

Currently, the Autism Society of America is collaborating with two of our working groups (Council of Autistic Advisors and Panel of Professional Advisors) to launch a national Suicide Prevention Task Force. This Task Force will work to better understand how suicide prevention hotline services currently operate and how they may be used to benefit persons with autism who call in a crisis.

Call our National Helpline at 1-800-3AUTISM or email us at info@autism-society.org to connect with our trained Information and Referral Specialists. We’re here to support you wherever you are in your journey. Thank you for your continued support – let’s save lives together.

Sincerely,
Christopher Banks
President and CEO

Our Promise During COVID-19: The Autism Society of America promises to remain committed to improving the lives of all affected by autism across the spectrum and throughout the lifespan, and will focus on providing information, resources, and advocacy efforts to address these urgent needs.
