Fauci and colleagues argue that future coronavirus outbreaks are inevitable. They urge the global research community to focus on three critical needs: characterizing the full expanse of coronaviruses in bats and other wild and farmed animals; gathering deeper understanding about disease pathogenesis through clinical studies; and applying that knowledge to the development of long-lasting, broadly protective universal coronavirus vaccines.
