Black History Month: Celebrating Black Contributions: Dr. Jane Wright. HHS OMH.

This Black History Month, the HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) is celebrating the achievements of Black Americans and honoring the significant role and impact they have made on all facets of life and society throughout U.S. history.

Dr. Jane Cooke Wright's focus on patient care helped improve and advance chemotherapy techniques. Her contributions help us understand how patient response is vital to effective cancer treatment.

The article outlines how the Task Force is helping improve health equity by actively working to counteract the effects of systemic racism in healthcare. It details concrete steps that are underway to change Task Force methods, processes, and evidence-based recommendation statements on disease screening and testing.

The Effectiveness of Policies to Improve Primary Care Access for Underserved Populations, a report published by the Milbank Memorial Fund, reviews available evidence on whether policy initiatives targeting primary care access in five key areas have effectively reduced health care disparities. The five areas reviewed were: availability of primary care physicians, use of community-based out-patient clinics, structural barriers, financial barriers, and communication between patients and physicians.

Genetics of Obesity, Diabetes, and Heart Disease in Black,
Afro-Caribbean, and African Migrant Populations

This study, sponsored by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), seeks Black, Afro-Caribbean, or sub-Saharan African volunteers age 18 years or older. The study will collect genetic and non-genetic information from individuals with African ancestry to study common health conditions related to obesity, adult-onset diabetes, and heart disease. The study will be carried out at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

Treatment Decision Making in Black Women Diagnosed with
Triple Negative Breast Cancer

This study, sponsored by the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and the National Cancer Institute (NCI), seeks Black, Afro-Caribbean, or African female volunteers age 18 years or older. This study will evaluate what influences treatment decision-making in Black women with triple negative breast cancer, as well as the influence of information sources that support this decision-making process. The study will be carried out at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.

Indigenous Public Health Leadership Program

The Indigenous Public Health Leadership Program, offered by the National Network of Public Health Institutes with support from CDC, is a six-month training institute for public health professionals working within a Tribal health department or in an Indian Health Service (IHS) healthcare facility.
Program runs from March to August 2022
