Lyme disease is an infection transmitted by deer ticks in some parts of the United States, mostly the Northeast and upper Midwest. Symptoms may include fever, headache, fatigue, and a rash that sometimes looks like a bull's eye. Antibiotics are the only known effective treatment for Lyme disease. Patients who receive antibiotic treatment in the early stages of Lyme disease usually recover quickly and completely. A variety of "natural" or other alternative treatments—such as oxygen, energy, nutritional, or herbal therapy—have been promoted for Lyme disease. These treatments haven't been shown to be effective, and some may be harmful. |
