Researchers have studied a variety of complementary health approaches to see if they are helpful for symptoms of seasonal allergies (hay fever).

  • The herb butterbur may help relieve symptoms, but serious questions have been raised about its safety. It's uncertain whether other foods and dietary supplements, such as probiotics, honey, grape seed extract, and omega-3 fatty acids, are helpful for seasonal allergy symptoms.

  • Several studies of acupuncture have found evidence that it may be helpful for seasonal allergy symptoms.

  • Rinsing the sinuses with a neti pot or other devices may be helpful. To avoid the risk of dangerous infections, it's important to use distilled, sterile, or boiled (and cooled) water; untreated tap water may not be safe.
