Exploring Psychedelics and Entactogens asTreatments for Psychiatric Disorders: A Virtual Workshop

Date/Time: March 29, 2022, 9:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m. ET
March 30, 2022, 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. ET
Location: Virtual Workshop

Recently, the notion that psychedelics (e.g., LSD and psilocybin) and entactogens (e.g., MDMA) may be tools to alleviate mental illness is experiencing a renaissance of interest in the scientific, medical, and commercial sectors. While promising data on therapeutic efficacy has energized research and development, resolving the mechanisms of action will be important for optimizing the efficacy and safety of these medicines. Further, evaluating the effect of psychedelics and entactogens on mood and behavior comes with unique challenges still in need of resolution. These include unresolved questions relating to blinding, placebo and nocebo effects, and the impact of psychosocial contexts.  With activity and interest quickly spreading across multiple sectors of society, this workshop will serve as a neutral venue for a timely conversation between diverse stakeholders about strategies for harnessing the potential of these agents to combat mental illness, while ensuring rigor and equity. This event is hosted by the National Academies' Forum on Neuroscience and Nervous Systems Disorders.

Speakers will discuss:

  • The current state of knowledge regarding mechanisms of action and clinical efficacy;
  • Considerations for research, clinical trial design, and regulatory approval;
  • Implementation issues related to bioethics, health care equity, patient protections, and risk management; and,
  • Opportunities to move the field forward.

Please visit the workshop homepage to tune into the live stream, view the agenda, and learn more information about the event and its planning committee. A recording of the webcast will be posted to the workshop homepage a few weeks following the event.
