Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month: September 15-October 15

Hispanic Heritage Month. HHS OMH. Image shows a Latino family.

Hispanic/Latino communities trace their heritage to Spanish-speaking countries in South and Central America, México, Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Spain. Hispanic Heritage Month reflects the diversity within the U.S. Hispanic/Latino population. September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for several Latin American countries, and many Spanish-speaking countries commemorate their indigenous people by celebrating Día de la Raza on October 12.

Visit the OMH Hispanic Heritage Month website to find bilingual resources and materials on Hispanic/Latino health, including a customizable graphic template in English and Spanish

Report: Spatial Access to Hospital-based Obstetric Units in Minoritized Racial/Ethnic Areas

Rural and Minority Health Research Center logo

This report, published by the Rural and Minority Health Research Center at the University of South Carolina, looks at the impact of travel burdens on rural access to pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum services:

  • 80.2 percent of rural American Indian/Alaska Native areas have no hospital-based obstetric unit within 15 miles.
  • About one-third of rural areas with large Hispanic/Latino populations have no obstetric care within 30 miles.
  • Black-White maternal health disparities might be independent of distances to an obstetric unit and instead associated with social determinants of health.
