September 15-October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month. HHS OMH.

Social determinants of health (SDOH) contribute to wide health disparities and inequities. For example, people who don't have access to grocery stores with healthy foods are less likely to have good nutrition, which can raise their risk of health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.

Visit the HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) Hispanic Heritage Month website to learn more about the SDOH affecting Hispanic/Latino communities. You can also find helpful resources from OMH partners to share with your communities, patients, and organizations.

Resources: COVID-19

The Canada-U.S. Joint Action Plan on Opioids (APO) Health Working Group released a white paper, Substance Use and Harms During COVID-19 and Approaches to Federal Surveillance and Response, that addresses the impact of COVID-19 on the opioids crisis and policy responses to address substance use from the outset of the pandemic to September 2022.

According to the Black Coalition Against COVID report, The State of Black America and COVID-19: A Two-Year Assessment, the COVID-19 vaccination rate among Black adults is 80 percent, but inequities persist in hospitalization rates, mental health impacts, and long COVID.

New CDC Campaign: Fight Flu – Don't Let it Stop You

Help Them Fight Flu, So They Can Do What They Do. Image shows a young Asian girl playing outside.

Each year millions of children get the flu and thousands are hospitalized. There are many reasons to get a flu vaccine—whether to keep yourself healthy, prevent the worsening of a chronic health condition, or protect loved ones who may be more vulnerable to flu's potentially serious complications, like children.

CDC and OMH invite you to join us in encouraging everyone six months and older to get a flu vaccine this year with the new Fight Flu: Don't Let It Stop You campaign. The campaign includes resources to help you promote flu vaccination this season, including customizable frames and story panels

It's back to school season, and for many children and adolescents, that means another year filled with stress and social pressures. Now is the perfect time to talk with kids about developing positive coping strategies and healthy behaviors. It's also a good time for parents, community leaders, and anyone who works with children to think about ways to help kids feel safe, healthy, and valued.

This week, the OMH Knowledge Center is featuring a collection of resources focusing on physical and behavioral health promotion for children and adolescents. These resources are available for free and can be accessed through the online catalog here.
