Research on Pain Management in Military Personnel and Veterans

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health is leading a multiagency collaboration, the National Institutes of Health (NIH)–Department of Defense (DOD)–Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Pain Management Collaboratory, to test nondrug approaches for the management of pain and related conditions in military personnel and veterans. The studies are being performed in the real-world settings where the participants receive their health care.  

The Collaboratory's studies are addressing a critical gap between science and practice in pain management. The lessons learned from its 11 large-scale studies may help to improve care of both military and civilian patients with chronic pain.
