Hcis, hurry! You can help us reach our goal.

Did you know up to 30% of people with Autism are non-speaking or minimally speaking?

Did you know up to 30% of people with Autism are non-speaking or minimally speaking? There are communication tools and training options available, but as a community we run into systemic barriers that make it difficult to access the resources needed to make communication possible.

That’s why the Autism Society is dedicated to creating connections—to information, resources, and supports—and ensuring that every Autistic individual can live fully. Elizabeth Bonker, a member of the Autism Society of America’s Council of Autistic Advisors, explains her own communication experience:

“What prevents non-speakers with Autism like me from reliably speaking and controlling our bodies is a neuromotor disorder called apraxia- not an intellectual disability. I believe all non-speakers with Autism can learn to use AAC, and the world would be enriched by their voices.” Elizabeth explains her own communication experience here.

Speaking and non-speaking members of our Council of Autistic Advisors guide our work, sharing unique and varied experiences, challenges, and perspectives. With their guidance, we are actively working to design accessible programs, communication resources, and ensuring the diverse set of abilities and experiences of the Autism community are represented throughout our work.
