Friday, July 21, 2023 NIAID grantees have identified a biological mechanism that may drive people to avoid foods they are allergic to. The researchers show in a mouse model of food allergy that the part of the immune system involved in allergic responses communicates with the brain by releasing molecules called leukotrienes and a hormone called growth and differentiation factor 15 (GDF15). These substances lead to the activation of brain regions that promote avoidance of the food that triggered the allergic response. The findings are published in the journal Nature. |
