The science journal PNAS has recognized a NIAID research team for applying knowledge learned from studying COVID-19-causing SARS-CoV-2 to a different human coronavirus, HCoV-OC43, which causes common colds. Researchers in NIAID's Laboratory of Viral Diseases previously identified the nucleocapsid protein from SARS-CoV-2 as a surface antigen having strong immunomodulatory properties. The group then expanded its nucleocapsid study to HCoV-OC43 and found the protein has similar promising immune-system roles, making it a target for future studies of HCoV vaccines.
