Friday, August 11, 2023 Receiving a COVID-19 mRNA vaccine or booster during pregnancy can benefit pregnant people and their newborn infants, a NIAID-supported study has found. The Multisite Observational Maternal and Infant Study for COVID-19 (MOMI-VAX) tracked the antibodies in blood samples taken from pregnant people both before and after receiving mRNA vaccines and boosters for COVID-19, as well as in their cord blood upon giving birth. Not only did vaccinating and boosting increase levels of antibodies for COVID-19 in pregnant people, but the antibodies crossed the placenta, suggesting that the newborns could also have received some protection against COVID-19. |
