World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day – Focus on Leishmaniasis

January 30th marks Neglected Tropical Diseases Day. This collection of diseases encompasses a wide variety of illnesses which primarily affect tropical regions of the world. Some, like leishmaniasis, are parasitic diseases. Some, like dengue and chikungunya, are transmitted by mosquitoes. Collectively, neglected tropical diseases (or NTDs) likely affect more than a billion people worldwide, according to the World Health Organization—and NIAID is committed to researching better ways to fight against them.
