Credit: NIAID Penicillin, a preferred treatment for syphilis and gonorrhea, can be given to many people with previously reported low-risk penicillin allergies. An algorithm developed by researchers in the NIAID-funded STI Clinical Trials Group allows STI clinics to safely clear people with previously reported penicillin allergy for use of the antibiotic for STI treatment. Using the process, 67% of people who reported prior penicillin allergy could safely receive the antibiotic for treatment of gonorrhea or syphilis. The study was published in Clinical Infectious Diseases. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases | National Institutes of Health | | | |
