A little more than 60 years ago, Dr. Ruth Sullivan learned her son, Joseph, was Autistic.

Dear Hcis,

A little more than 60 years ago, Dr. Ruth Sullivan learned her son, Joseph, was Autistic. When she asked what she could do to support him, she was met with silence.

In her refusal to dismiss her son’s strengths and abilities, Dr. Sullivan sought out community and resources, beginning a life-long dedication to advocacy for the Autism community. Ultimately, she became the co-founder and first President of the Autism Society of America, officially incorporated on November 14, 1965.

Today, we kick off the Autism Society’s Gifts of Acceptance campaign in celebration of Founder’s Day with a generous annual donation of $200,000 from our partner, Goodnites, the #1 nighttime underwear*. Like Dr. Sullivan, Goodnites is dedicated to supporting education and community efforts for families of children with Autism. These efforts continue the legacy of our Gifts of Acceptance campaign — highlighting personal stories from the Autism community to inspire action. We invite you to view these stories, reflect on our history, and make your own Gift of Acceptance.

Give Today

“Over the past six decades, the Autism Society has made significant strides in fostering awareness, inclusion, and advocacy for the Autistic community. The Autism Society has driven important legislative changes and provided invaluable resources for Autistic individuals, families, and allies across varying support levels. The Autism Society must continue advocating for policy and research that go beyond dominant, one-size-fits-all interventions, ensuring diverse solutions and better quality of life for all. It is essential that traditional practices do not overshadow the lived experiences of those most affected.” - Hari Srinivasan, Ph.D Candidate, Scientist, minimally-speaking Autistic, Activist

Please consider joining Goodnites, Hari, the Autism Society, and the millions of Autism community members working towards a brighter future. A gift today allows us to carry on a vital mission to ensure that everyone in the Autism community has the resources they need, when they need them — and no one ever feels alone in their journey.

With gratitude,

Christopher Banks

About Goodnites x The Autism Society of America

Goodnites are reusable, disposable nighttime underwear that help protect children aged 3 to 17 against bedwetting accidents. They are designed to comfortably fit kids 28-140 lbs. Bedwetting is a common experience that many children deal with, but it can be more common and sometimes last longer among children with disabilities, particularly Autism and ADHD. It can significantly impact the emotional well-being of both children and caregivers. Our partnership with Goodnites aims to provide essential resources to support families, regardless of where they are in their bedwetting journey. This year, Goodnites has generously donated $200,000 to support education and community efforts for families of children with Autism throughout 2024. You can visit Goodnites.com to learn more.
