More training and better outcomes to save lives

Emergency situations can trigger any number of behavioral responses for individuals with Autism.

Dear Hcis,

Emergency situations can trigger any number of behavioral responses for individuals with Autism. Devastating outcomes can occur, especially when benign Autistic behaviors are misinterpreted as suspicious, evasive, or dangerous. Unfortunately, most first responder training typically does not consider neurodivergence.

The Autism Society’s Safety on the SpectrumTM: First Responder Program is a national effort to promote safe and equitable interactions between first responders and the Autism community.

As we continue our Gifts of Acceptance campaign, I invite you to make your own gift to advance our work.

Give Today
Approximately 1 in 5 young adults with Autism will interact with a police officer before the age of 21.

Approximately 1 in 5 young adults with Autism will interact with a police officer before the age of 21. Too many of these events will result in restraint, arrest, improper use of force, physical and emotional trauma, and even death.

“I had multiple interactions with police officers and paramedics...and it definitely helps that they know what I am struggling with. I am unique like every other human,” shared Austin, an Autistic Advocate. Your gift will allow us to train more first responders, develop curriculum for safety and awareness, and keep our community safe.

With appreciation,
