This holiday season, families across America will gather to celebrate and create memories – but we know that the holidays also bring changes to routine and a greater likelihood of overstimulation. Some people with Autism may wander – or elope – when experiencing overstimulation or stressful scenarios. Unfortunately, this is a heartbreaking reminder that Autistic individuals are at an exponentially higher risk for water and wandering-related tragedies. As we race toward year-end, I hope you will make your own Gift of Acceptance to expand our positive impact.
“We live in North Idaho and there is water everywhere. It’s the thing we like to do as a family; going to the lake. Sensory-wise, he did not care to wear a life vest and he also could not swim and was very drawn to water. So he would just wander into the lake and thankfully I was aware of all these things; that he was going to do this. But it only takes 2 seconds to get over his head,” shared Jennifer, a parent of an Autistic child. Some of the most important work we do at the Autism Society is through our Safety on the Spectrum: Water and Wandering Program. It may not be swimming season in most of the U.S. right now, but the fact remains that 49% of people with Autism wander regardless of time of year.
