Acupuncture is a technique in which practitioners insert fine needles into the skin to treat health problems. It originated in China and has been used in some form for at least 2,500 years.

How acupuncture works is not fully understood. However, there's evidence that it may have effects on the nervous system and other body tissues, as well as nonspecific (placebo) effects.

Research has shown that acupuncture may be helpful for several pain conditions, including back and neck pain, knee pain associated with osteoarthritis, and postoperative pain. Acupuncture may also help relieve seasonal allergy symptoms, stress incontinence in women, and nausea and vomiting associated with cancer treatment.
